Hi!
I'm Mrs. Perkins, and I've taught second grade for 17
years at Northwood Hills.
I
grew up in Waco with my brother and mother, who has taught
for over forty years. Upon graduation from Richfield
High School (1-2-3 Hook um' Rams), I attended Spelman
College in Atlanta, Georgia and later transferred to
Prairie View A & M University where I graduated with
honors and received my BA degree in Mass
Communications/Marketing. After college, I decided
to attend graduate school and completed many grueling
hours in Business Administration. YIKES!
I
later worked in the field of advertising and marketing for
a small advertising agency in Houston. Working
closely with the art director instilled a love for
creativity and perfection. What a great experience!
Although
I loved the field of advertising, I was in love with kids.
I taught all the neighborhood kids and that really changed
my interest, so I decided to teach professionally and that
meant going back to school.
Going
back to school wasn't easy, after being out for so long,
but I became a certified elementary teacher and found this
great school. NHE is a wonderful place to teach.
The kids here love to learn, and I love teaching them.
I
live in Irving with my husband Reggie, who is a realtor
with/for the Michael Group in Dallas, and with my
three sons that range from all ages. Jason, the
oldest, is a certified massage therapist and is 24 years
old. Reggie, the baseball player, is 15, and going
into 10th grade this year. He is a certified
life guard who enjoys playing high school football and
baseball for the City of Coppell. Jefferson, the youngest and the oldest, who
thinks he's the boss of the family, is 9 and going into
4th grade. He enjoys swimming and playing
baseball for the City of Coppell.
I have
completed a three week writing institute called the New
Jersey Writing Project in Texas. This is a well known
institute designed to provide teachers the finest tools
and instruction to help students become the best writers
possible. Recently, I completed a 30 hour class in
gifted and talented education. I guess you can say I
love learning, too. I'm excited about my new second
grade class, and I'm looking forward to implementing all
the strategies and creative lessons I've learned. We
are going to have a great year!
